Want to explore a unique regional cuisine you just saw a video about? Let’s definitely go. This lifestyle largely sums up the travel approach of urban Indian Gen Z today. It stands in stark contrast to how India used to travel in the past. If you grew up in a middle-class Indian household, you would know that travel was largely a 1 time a year event. It was mostly saved for the long summer holidays. 1 trip, or maybe 2 if the family budget allowed, was all most families could look forward to in a single year. But the new generation is completely changing that pattern.

The Rise of Frequent Micro Cations

Travel is no longer just an annual affair on the family calendar. It now shows up every few weeks or months. A new survey of over 2000 Gen Zers conducted by Airbnb and YouGov in April 2026 makes that trend pretty clear. This young generation is incredibly big on micro-cations. 70 per cent of the survey respondents said they prefer taking 3 short trips over 1 single long annual holiday. A frequent roster of short, 24 to 72-hour getaways is what they truly prefer, instead of waiting the whole year for a single big trip. Frequency is not the only thing that sets these travel habits apart. Their core intent is completely different, and so is their final execution.

Welcome to the World of Why Cations

For this generation, travel is more about the purpose rather than the place itself. The quick decision to get away is driven more by why they want to travel than where they actually want to go. Airbnb has formally termed this new trend a why-cation. A why-cation is a short trip sparked by a specific mood, a personal need, or a feeling. This could mean slowing down in nature, discovering a new food culture, seeking an adventure, or simply escaping the daily routine for a few days. The destination itself is secondary because the actual experience comes first. Taking a quick break from daily stress and burnout is the top trigger to plan a trip for 43 per cent of Gen Z.

The Spontaneous Anti-Itinerary Trip

Unlike previous generations, modern travel is no longer centred on heavy sightseeing. There are no strict must-visit checklists that they are actively chasing. In fact, they are running away from viral hotspots and looking for genuinely undiscovered places. Following the crowd out of fear of missing out is simply not their way to travel. In the survey, as many as 95 per cent of travellers say they want their trips to feel personal, unique, and less rigidly planned. Meanwhile, 90 per cent actively seek out undiscovered destinations over viral recommendations. They also leave room for total spontaneity. 64 per cent leave parts of their itinerary completely open-ended to make room for spontaneous discoveries. More strikingly, 2 in 3 travellers say they travel with the sole intention of doing absolutely nothing. No sightseeing, no must-see attractions, and no elaborate plans. Just rest, relaxation, and a few slow days are all they want. Nearly a quarter of them make this slow approach a part of every single trip they take. However, there is a clear reminder to not blindly follow a viral social media video claiming a place is a hidden gem that no 1 knows about. By the time you watch that clip, millions of others have watched it too, meaning it is no longer a hidden gem.

Hunting for Local Lore

Another key travel trend is what can best be described as local lore hunting. Instead of limiting themselves to traditional tourist attractions and famous landmarks, young people are increasingly interested in experiencing a destination the exact way locals do. That means wandering through ordinary neighbourhood markets, browsing local grocery stores, spending time in everyday community spaces, or seeking out lesser-known corners of a city that rarely make it into standard travel guides. The main appeal lies in discovering the ordinary rather than the iconic. The final numbers reflect this shift clearly. As many as 81 per cent of Gen Z travellers say they thoroughly enjoy exploring local markets, grocery stores, and everyday neighbourhood spots when they travel.
